MEDIA RELEASE

         NICK XENOPHON M.L.C.

INDEPENDENT NO POKIES MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

1 March 2006

JUST THE TICKET:

TWO COMMUNITY LEADERS TO BE RUNNING MATES WITH MR. X

●    Media Conference today at steps of Parliament at 12.30pm

Drug Rehabilitation Pioneer Ann Bressington and Land Tax Reform Campaigner

John Darley will be the running mates on No Pokies MLC Nick Xenophon’s ticket.

Ann is founder of DrugBeat, the abstinence based drug rehabilitation program operating out of Shay Louise House at Elizabeth (named after Ann’s daughter who died of a heroin overdose in 1998).

John is a former Valuer-General for SA, and the Convener for the Land Tax Reform Association of SA – which has campaigned for a revamp of property based taxes.

Mr Xenophon said:

“While my primary focus will always be the damage caused by Pokies, having Ann and John on my ticket – two outstanding and highly regarded community campaigners – will also make the point that since elected in 1997 I have championed a whole range of community issues.”

Mr Xenophon also said his biggest challenge was to get the message across to voters that every South Australian could vote for him, and they could do so by voting “1” above the line.

“I am still amazed at the number of people that come up to me that don’t realise this – if the Government spent less money on political spin ads at taxpayer’s expense, and more on educating the public on how to exercise their fundamental right to vote, there wouldn’t be so much confusion out in the community.”
