FOLLOWING SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS BROADCAST LAST NIGHT

MOVE FOR PARLIAMENTARY INQUIRY INTO MEDICAL BOARD

No Pokies MLC Nick Xenophon will move for a Parliamentary Inquiry into the Medical Board of SA, following serious allegations broadcast last night on Today Tonight.

The story concerns the role the Medical Board played in the supervision of Dr. Stephen Rabone, who worked in the Riverland at the Barmera Hospital between 1990 and mid 1991.  It is alleged that Dr. Rabone infected a number of patients at the Barmera Hospital as a result of using a syringe on himself and then patients with narcotic pain medication.  A number of former patients are suing in the Courts for contracting Hepatitis C that they claim was contracted as a result of Dr. Rabone’s actions.

“The story broadcast last night on ‘Today Tonight’ contains a number of very serious allegations about the Medical Board, its governance, and the protection of the public interest.  For these matters to be properly explored it needs to be done in the context of a Parliamentary Committee where questions can be asked of the Medical Board, and those that have legitimate grievances against the Board can also have an opportunity to state their case.”

“The issue of doctors who have a drug problem is a vexed one.  I am all for such doctors getting appropriate help and rehabilitation – but the paramount concern of the Medical Board should be the protection of the public interest and the health and safety of South Australians.  The public has a right to know whether the allegations made last night on ‘Today Tonight’ are indicative of a deeper systemic malaise in the way that doctors who pose a risk to the public are dealt with”.
